Review 2. Rave Master

by Mashima Hiro                            Chapters/Episodes: 296/54

Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, Mystery, Shounen

What's so good about Rave Master? For many, this manga is somewhat boring. Well, sometimes it's dumb, but definitely not boring.

Another classic, first published in 1999, by the very much admired Mashima Hiro. If you have read his work (Fairy Tail, Mashima-en, Monster Hunter Orage, etc.) you how it usually is: funny, action-filled, romantic (and sexy), stupid and... weird, at times. I mean, I love Rave Master, it is my 10th favourite manga, but I have to admit it can get too weird at times.

Manga   /    Anime

Art: 4.5 stars     /    Quality: 4 stars
Plot: 4.8 stars     /     Story: 3.7 stars
Characters: 4.8 stars    /   Characters: 4.8 stars
Violence: High     /    Violence: Medium-high
Sex: medium-high    /    Sex: medium

The art is as usual: bad at the beggining, really good later. It's incredibly graphic, specially with the violence scenes. Kids under 12 shouldn't read it (I was 16 when I first read it, and it still shocked me at times).

The story is kinda cliche, but good nonetheless. A boy, Haru Glory (the "choosen" one) discovers he is the succesor to the current Rave Master, Shiva. And he has to embark on a journey to collect all Rave and defeat evil. This way he meets multiple allies and enemies, bla, bla, bla...
All this we are used to, so you're probably wondering... why the hell are you reviewing it then?!

Two reasons: despite this cliche-type story it is good on these two things: mystery and weirdness.

Like I said, some characters in this manga (Plue, Griff, etc.) are just so weird, that must writers would never dare to create them, because they can be a hindrance for readers. But not Mashima. He took the risk and it turned out just fine. Rave Master's story can get pretty dark and dramatic at times, so these weird characters relieve the 'seriousness' big deal; 80% of the comedy in this manga it's due to them, so don't understimate these guys, they are hilarious.

Now, about the mystery. I must say it, the main reason I decided to read RM until the end was thanks to Elie's mystery. Elie, the main female character, is the first character to come across our hero, Haru, While Haru's mission is to find Rave and master it, Elie's quest is to find her lost memory: she has amnesia. Yes, I know, I know, this is somewhat cliche as well, but seriously, this mystery is really well developed, it drove me nuts back then,

Characters. Hmmm... there isn't much to mention about them, they are okay, but there isn't much character development with the exceptions of Haru and Let. My personal favorite, nonetheless, it's Julia, she is so cool.

Concerning sex and violence... there is a lot of the later as i've mentioned, and a fair amount of the first, but not too much and not too indecent, so it's still enjoyable.

About the anime, there isn't much to say.... it has less violence and less sex cont. The manga and the anime have different starts, the quality of the anime isn't outstanding and the voice actors ain't half bad.

My recommendation: If you don't mind some weird stupidity and lack of character development, read RM. You'll like it, because, it is a good manga.

Review 1. Shaman King

Author: Takei Hiroyuki        Chapters/Episodes: 300/64

Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Shounen, Supernatural

A shaman is the one who connects this world with the next. That's the opening sentence you will usually find when looking for this manga.

I've decided to start with this one because it is the first manga I read eight years ago, so I think this is the perfect manga to start my blog. First published in 1998 it's one of the most popular and classical mangas ever. I may be prejudiced, but you just gotta love Shaman King and right now, I'll give you multiple reasons.

Manga/Anime

Art: 4.8 stars/Quality: 4.6 stars
Plot: 5 stars/Story: 4 stars
Characters: 4.7 stars/Characters: 4 stars
Violence level: medium-high/Violence level: low-medium
Sexual content level: non-existent-low/Sex. C. level: inexistent-low

I'll start with the manga since it's the one that's really worth reviewing.

The story it's about 14-year-old Asakura Yoh (newbies: japanese people give their last name first and then the first name, and that's the way of introduction I'll be using) who is a country side kid that goes living to Tokyo and meets Oyamada Manta a regular kid. Both of them can see ghosts, but Yoh can also merge with them, because he is a Shaman, Manta doesn't trust him or like him at first, because Yoh is easy-going and careless, while Manta is the exact opposite; but with time, they become great friends. Once they trust each other, Manta asks Yoh what he is doing in Tokyo, he replies he's looking for a strong 'Guardian Ghost' a permant partner, who can help him become the next Shaman King...

Shaman King is great. Takei did an awesome job with it. The art in the first few volumes isn't really good, but those who've been reading mangas for a while should know that most mangas start that way, after the 7th or 8th volume, the art usually improves, so don't let yourself be fooled by it. The plot may not be completely original, but it's not boring or stupid, there are multiple twists and turns (which I really love) and it manages to keep the reader on the edge.

The characters are really cool and funny; my personal favorite is Anna, the main female character. The personalities of each character are different and their stories are amazing. And as the story moves on, you can see how each and everyone of them grows and changes, which it's a little something that writers sometimes forget: character development, Personally, I loooooved the Ozorezan Revoir arc, it's brilliant and it's such a shame they cut it out of the anime.

Regarding violence, well it's not out of the ordinary (though, there are a couple of chapters that are really harsh) so, if you don't have stomach for some really graphic scenes, better watch the anime then. As for sexual content, there is none (compared to others, it's non-existent), of course, there are sexy, beautiful girls and guys, but this manga isn't really focused on romance (there are couples and everything, but plot and drama are the ones who steal the spotlight).

About the anime: not bad, but not as good as the manga. It's a good laugh, but that's it. If you want an interesting story, go to the manga. Ah, also, I hate Lyzerg's anime version (bet 99% of fans do, actually).

Recommendation: Awesome. You have to read it.... unless you really, really can't recognize a good manga when you read it.

Yane!

Introductions first

Hi, there cyber people!

I'm Midnight Rose. Welcome to my blog: COW (Club: Otaku World). No, it's no joke. Don't laugh. Yeah, maybe I could've thought of a better name, but hell, who cares really.

Ok, so... what is this blog about? Reviews. Which reviews? Mangas & animes, duh, guess it's obvious by the word Otaku. From now on, each week, I'll be reviewing a manga or an anime, short or long, popular or not so popular, classic or new, so that you, fans of this world, may decide whether you want to check it out or not.

I guess you can't really trust my judgement since I'm not famous in the web, but I've been in this world for 8 years, so I have some experience and good taste (hem, or so I've been told).

So, before I start with my reviews, I'll explain how I decide how good a manga or anime is. Basically I check five main important points:

1)Art (for mangas) & Quality (for animes)
2)Plot/Story
3)Characters
4)Violence
5)Sexual content

Through these five, I make my decision. In each of my reviews, I'll tell you the points I give each category, together with other extra details (genres, author, and so on) and of course a summary and my opinions. If the manga I review already has an anime and viceversa, I will review them both at the same time. I must add three more things, so that you can hate me now, and not later.

1) These genres I'll never, EVER, review, so don't expect them with me: shoujo, shounen Ai (Yaoi), shoujo Ai (Yuri), Sports, Hentai(Smut) and Mature (Adult); it's not that I hate them, but they are simply not my style. These I'll seldomly review: Historical, Meccha, Horror, Tragedy, Slice of Life, Pschycological, Martial Arts and Gender Bender. The rest, we'll see them often.

2) I'll only review mangas & animes I've already completed since I don't like to give incomplete judgements, so if you want me to review the 'hot' ones, well, we'll have to wait until they are finished.

3) I won't review the Big Three: One Piece, Naruto & Bleach and I have two reasons: one, they are too popular, so there's really no point in reviewing them; two, I haven't watched/read them. Yep, you read that right. I've been told many times what a crime that is, but I've always liked to read/watch shorter, not so popular ones; maybe someday I will check them out, but not now.

So people, this is all for today. Hope you will like my reviews. Soon, we will get our first one.

Oyasami, mina!
(Translation for newbies: Good night everyone!)
