Review 1. Shaman King

Author: Takei Hiroyuki        Chapters/Episodes: 300/64

Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Shounen, Supernatural

A shaman is the one who connects this world with the next. That's the opening sentence you will usually find when looking for this manga.

I've decided to start with this one because it is the first manga I read eight years ago, so I think this is the perfect manga to start my blog. First published in 1998 it's one of the most popular and classical mangas ever. I may be prejudiced, but you just gotta love Shaman King and right now, I'll give you multiple reasons.

Manga/Anime

Art: 4.8 stars/Quality: 4.6 stars
Plot: 5 stars/Story: 4 stars
Characters: 4.7 stars/Characters: 4 stars
Violence level: medium-high/Violence level: low-medium
Sexual content level: non-existent-low/Sex. C. level: inexistent-low

I'll start with the manga since it's the one that's really worth reviewing.

The story it's about 14-year-old Asakura Yoh (newbies: japanese people give their last name first and then the first name, and that's the way of introduction I'll be using) who is a country side kid that goes living to Tokyo and meets Oyamada Manta a regular kid. Both of them can see ghosts, but Yoh can also merge with them, because he is a Shaman, Manta doesn't trust him or like him at first, because Yoh is easy-going and careless, while Manta is the exact opposite; but with time, they become great friends. Once they trust each other, Manta asks Yoh what he is doing in Tokyo, he replies he's looking for a strong 'Guardian Ghost' a permant partner, who can help him become the next Shaman King...

Shaman King is great. Takei did an awesome job with it. The art in the first few volumes isn't really good, but those who've been reading mangas for a while should know that most mangas start that way, after the 7th or 8th volume, the art usually improves, so don't let yourself be fooled by it. The plot may not be completely original, but it's not boring or stupid, there are multiple twists and turns (which I really love) and it manages to keep the reader on the edge.

The characters are really cool and funny; my personal favorite is Anna, the main female character. The personalities of each character are different and their stories are amazing. And as the story moves on, you can see how each and everyone of them grows and changes, which it's a little something that writers sometimes forget: character development, Personally, I loooooved the Ozorezan Revoir arc, it's brilliant and it's such a shame they cut it out of the anime.

Regarding violence, well it's not out of the ordinary (though, there are a couple of chapters that are really harsh) so, if you don't have stomach for some really graphic scenes, better watch the anime then. As for sexual content, there is none (compared to others, it's non-existent), of course, there are sexy, beautiful girls and guys, but this manga isn't really focused on romance (there are couples and everything, but plot and drama are the ones who steal the spotlight).

About the anime: not bad, but not as good as the manga. It's a good laugh, but that's it. If you want an interesting story, go to the manga. Ah, also, I hate Lyzerg's anime version (bet 99% of fans do, actually).

Recommendation: Awesome. You have to read it.... unless you really, really can't recognize a good manga when you read it.

Yane!
